Code of conduct bus and rail – September 2022 PDFHome to school transport policy 2022-2023 PDF

Parents can apply for a season ticket to the School Transport Team at Cornwall Council who will confirm your child’s entitlement to a contract bus pass for the academic year and the allocated route for travel.

Pupils who are eligible for free travel (living in Carnon Downs, Devoran, Feock, Playing Place, St Erme and Trispen and the surrounding areas) are able to travel on designated school buses which are provided under contract to the Local Authority. This applies to any child whose home address is more than 3 miles away from Penair School where the school is the closest school to the home address.  For any parent who lives in the Goonhavern/Perranporth areas can you please make contact with Ms M Vingoe (mvingoe@penair.cornwall.sch.uk) who can advise you about transport arrangements since the Local Authority does not have responsibility for transport in this particular circumstance where pupils live greater than 3 miles from the school.

It is the responsibility of the parent/carer to ensure their child attends school regularly.  This includes making the necessary arrangements for attendance at school, such as submitting applications for admission and transport where necessary.

The designated area for all addresses in Cornwall can be viewed via:

www.cornwall.gov.uk/education‐and‐learning/schools‐and‐colleges/school‐admissions/designated‐areas

Where a child attends a school which is not the nearest available school or designated school as a result of parental preference, transport will only be provided in very exceptional circumstances. Parents/carers should therefore be aware when making a preference for a school which is not the nearest or designated school that they will remain responsible for transport to and from school should their family or financial circumstances change.

Where spare seats are available on vehicles contracted by the Local Authority to provide transport to school, these may be allocated to children not entitled to travel free of charge – such children are referred to as ‘Concessionary Riders’.  Concessionary Rider seats will only be made available where there are genuine spare seats available ‐ i.e. fully‐ available and not where absenteeism falsely indicates availability.

Further details regarding the approach taken by the Local Authority regarding transport is to be found at:

Applying for home to school transport is available at:

The Pupil Transport Team are able to advise you on any transport matters by contacting them on 0300 1234 222 or by email to transporteligibility@cornwall.gov.uk . Likewise, since the Local Authority has responsibility for home-to-school transport where a pupil is eligible to take a ‘designated school bus’, should you have any concerns to raise about any transport arrangements can you please direct your concern to Transport@cornwall.gov.uk.

Pupils may also cycle or walk to/from school. Whilst every reasonable precaution will be taken to safeguard bicycles, the school will not be held responsible for any loss/theft/damage occur while stored on the school site. Cycle helmets and lights must be used.

For those children who take public transport to/from school then the expectation is that they adhere to the Cornwall Council ‘Code of Good practice for pupils’ (see attached document).

Finally, parents who drive their children to/from school are asked to drop them at the smaller turning circle at the furthest entrance of the school near to the bus bay car park provided for this purpose.  Please do not use the visitors’ car park at the front of the school or the entrance to either car park. There are yellow marked lines at the front of school on the main highway clearly indicating no parking areas.
