Subject Intent: Religious Studies

The intent of our Religious Studies curriculum is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of diverse religious beliefs, practices, and their impact on individuals and societies. Our curriculum is designed to foster respect, tolerance, and empathy, aligning with the core British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Social, Moral, Cultural, and Emotional (SMSC) Development:

  1. Social Development: Through the study of various religions, students will develop social skills by engaging in discussions, group activities, and collaborative projects. They will learn to appreciate and respect the diversity of religious beliefs and practices, promoting social cohesion and understanding.
  2. Moral Development: Religious Studies encourages students to reflect on moral and ethical issues, helping them to develop a strong sense of right and wrong. By exploring religious teachings and their applications to contemporary issues, students will enhance their moral reasoning and decision-making skills.
  3. Cultural Development: The curriculum provides students with insights into different cultures and traditions, fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity. By studying the historical and cultural contexts of various religions, students will gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.
  4. Emotional Development: Religious Studies supports students’ emotional development by encouraging them to explore their own beliefs and values. Through reflective practices and discussions, students will develop emotional resilience, empathy, and a sense of identity and belonging.
By integrating British values and SMSC development into our Religious Studies curriculum, we aim to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become informed, respectful, and compassionate members of society.
