E-Cigarettes and Vapes:
What You Need to Know – The Pros and Cons
In recent years, e-cigarettes and vapes have become increasingly popular among young people, sparking important conversations in schools, homes, and communities. At Penair School, we believe it’s vital to provide clear and balanced information to help students make informed, healthy decisions. Here’s a look at the pros and cons of vaping, along with the facts everyone should be aware of.
What Are E-Cigarettes and Vapes?
E-cigarettes (also called vapes) are battery-powered devices that heat a liquid—often containing nicotine, flavourings, and other chemicals—into a vapour that the user inhales. Though originally designed to help adults quit smoking, their use among teenagers has risen dramatically in recent years.
Pros (Mostly from a Public Health Perspective)
It’s important to be honest about why some people choose to vape:
- Smoking Cessation Tool: For adults who are trying to quit traditional cigarettes, vaping has been promoted as a less harmful alternative.
- Fewer Harmful Chemicals than Cigarettes: E-cigarettes typically contain fewer toxic substances than combustible tobacco products.
- No Smoke: Vaping produces vapour rather than smoke, which may reduce exposure to harmful tar and carbon monoxide.
However, these benefits are relevant to adult smokers—not young people or non-smokers.
Cons (Especially for Teenagers)
Despite how vaping is often marketed or portrayed, there are serious risks involved—particularly for young people:
- Addiction: Most vapes contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can affect brain development in teenagers.
- Health Risks: Vaping can cause lung irritation, coughing, chest pain, and, in some cases, long-term respiratory problems.
- Unknown Long-Term Effects: E-cigarettes are relatively new, and research is still ongoing. We don’t yet know the full long-term health effects.
- Gateway to Smoking: Some studies suggest that teens who vape are more likely to start smoking traditional cigarettes later.
- Social and Legal Consequences: It is illegal for anyone under 18 to buy or use vapes in the UK. Bringing them onto school premises can lead to disciplinary action.
What We’re Doing at Penair
At Penair School, we are committed to promoting student health and wellbeing. We:
- Educate students about the risks of vaping through PSHE lessons and assemblies.
- Provide support for any student struggling with nicotine use.
- Work with parents and carers to address concerns and provide up-to-date information.
- Enforce a zero-tolerance policy for vaping on school grounds.
Advice for Students and Parents
- Students: Be cautious. Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s safe. Protect your health and future.
- Parents: Stay informed. Talk to your child about vaping, and watch for signs of use such as unusual scents, frequent coughing, or unexplained spending.
Final Thoughts
While vaping may be less harmful than smoking for adults, it is not safe or suitable for young people. At Penair, we want every student to thrive in a safe and healthy environment. If you have concerns or need support, please speak to a member of staff.
Together, we can make informed choices and look after our school community.
