Innovate, Design, Refine

70% of Penair students achieved Grade 4 or above in Design Technology subjects (3 Year Average 2019, 2022 & 2023) compared to a national average of 68%

Intent: The intention of the Design Technology Faculty is to enable all students to become independent, creative and innovative thinkers.

We encourage our students to use the design process to continuously challenge their own thinking.  Our enthusiasm and expertise encourages children to ask questions of their ideas and continuously reflect and evaluate their thinking.

We aim to provide a curriculum which builds progression, which the students also thoroughly enjoy.

Implementation: Students learn kinaesthetically and we encourage a high percentage of making and modelling at both key stages.

In Key Stage 3 students study three modules in DT each year: Engineering, Food & Catering, and Textiles. Modules are regularly updated to keep pace with changing technologies.

At Key Stage 4 a range of materials are offered as popular options at GCSE. The faculty regularly reviews these and offers new courses to inspire and motivate students in our fast changing world.

The DT area is exceptionally attractive with well organised and equipped classrooms, community spaces and corridors.  Students are able to make use of a laser cutter, a 3-D printer, well equipped specialist rooms, and an up to date computer suite with ‘state of the art’ design software.

We run popular after schools clubs in food and engineering.  We are very proud of our success in “Future Chef” where we have been present at the National Finals on three separate occasions.

Impact: We strive to produce students who are keen and enthusiastic to make their way forward into further education and the world of work.  We look to students to challenge themselves and come away as resilient, confident individuals.
